FAQs

How long is the processing time for the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa?

Once a complete set of documents has been successfully submitted through the Board of Investment (BOI) LTR Visa system, the processing time is typically no more than 20 working days.

Can I apply for a Thailand LTR Visa while traveling?

Yes. An LTR Visa application can be submitted while you are traveling. There are no restrictions on the applicant’s location, and you may be in any country during the application process.

Can I switch from another Thai visa to an LTR Visa?

Yes. Applicants currently holding another Thai visa may switch to an LTR Visa, subject to eligibility and approval.

Where can I obtain my Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa stamp?

After your LTR Visa has been approved, you may obtain your visa stamp at one of the following locations within 60 days of approval:

  • The Thailand Investment and Expat Services Center (TIESC) in Bangkok, or
  • A Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate

Why do some applicants choose to collect their LTR Visa at TIESC instead of an embassy or consulate?

Applicants are free to choose the visa collection location that best suits their personal circumstances and travel plans. However, some applicants select TIESC for practical reasons, including:

  • The government visa fee at Thailand Investment and Expat Services Center (TIESC) is THB 50,000, whereas visa fees collected at embassies or consulates are subject to local exchange rates, which may be higher.
  • When TIESC is selected as the visa collection location, the LTR Visa approval (consideration) process is often quicker compared to selecting an embassy or consulate.
  • As your agent, our team can accompany you at TIESC to help ensure a smooth and seamless experience.

Note: To set appropriate expectations, visa affixation at TIESC may involve longer queues on certain days. As a result, the visa collection process may take longer than at an embassy or consulate. In most cases, the process is completed within approximately 2–4 hours.

As a Thailand Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa holder, is there a required minimum stay in Thailand?

No. There is no required minimum stay in Thailand for LTR Visa holders.

Is there an age requirement for the LTR Visa?

Age requirements depend on the visa category:

  • Wealthy Pensioner category: The applicant must be 50 years of age or older.
  • All other LTR categories: There is no age requirement.

For dependents, children must be under 20 years of age at the time of application.

Which type of Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa holder can apply for a Thai Work Permit?

All LTR Visa holders may apply for a Thai Work Permit, except applicants under the Work-From-Thailand Professional category, as this category is designed for remote work with overseas employers.

Can Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa holders open a Thai bank account?

Yes. Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa holders can open Thai bank accounts.

Useful tip: When opening a Thai bank account, it is recommended to visit a branch that regularly serves expatriate clients and is familiar with the LTR Visa. Some LTR Visa holders may encounter challenges at branches where staff are not familiar with LTR Visa–related procedures.

Can I start or own a business in Thailand with an LTR Visa?

This depends on your LTR Visa category and the business structure. Certain activities may require additional approvals in accordance with Thai laws and regulations.

Do LTR Visa holders need to report to Immigration every 90 days?

No. Under the LTR Visa program, the standard 90-day reporting requirement to the Thai Immigration Bureau is extended to once per year.

How long do I need to maintain insurance coverage for the LTR Visa?

You must maintain the required insurance coverage for the entire validity period of your LTR Visa. At the time of application, your insurance policy must have at least 10 months of remaining coverage.

During the LTR Visa validity period, can I sell property or change financial assets used in my application?
